pt.1: There are several types of magazine covers that could be used and that are used depending on the message the journalist is trying to get across to. First off, an image based magazine cover is the most common it usually consists of people taking a formal profile just smiling at the camera. Usually the more famous the person on the front cover the more the magazine sells. Sometimes, the image of the person is not as basic. For example, the person may be doing some weird movement or smiling to the side or in the distance or be in their own environment doing their own thing. At the end of the day, the image the journalist chooses depends on what the magazine portrays. Other times, the image may be of a scene and not of a person like a restaurant ad or a venue ad. Secondly, an illustration based magazine cover is occasionally used to give off a fun and out of the ordinary vibe to it and it is rare for a magazine to opt for an illustrated cover but when they do it usually catches the eye as it is not something often seen. Next, a type based magazine is used to strike the audience as most often the letters are big and bold or written in some way that is not often seen. The bigger the letters the more appealing and the more powerful especially when they are the only words on the whole cover. At last, a concept based magazine cover may be a combination of all previously spoken about magazine covers. Also it gives off a shocking and funny look and catches the readers’ eye. As much as an illustrator would love to add to a cover the key to an illustrated base cover is to make it comprehensible to the audience and not difficult to decipher.

pt.2: Words and photos go together because a photo by itself may be understandable but the words would add so much more information wise and design wise.
